IPSO Professional Football Scouting Tutor

I started my Football career with Scottish premier League team Dundee United where I spent seven years. I made my first team debut in December 1985 aged 19 years old in a UEFA Cup tie against Neuchâtel Xamax and league debut three days later against Glasgow Rangers at Ibrox in front of 40,000 supporters.

I helped Dundee United reach the 1987 Scottish cup final and UEFA Cup Final v Gothenburg, scoring against Barcelona in the quarter-finals en route. The following year I scored Dundee United's goal in the 1988 Scottish Cup Final.

I made my full international debut for Scotland against Colombia and went on to play in euro's '92 '96 and 1998 World Cup.

I was transferred to Coventry City in January 1990 for a fee of around £950,000.

I joined Blackburn Rovers in March 1993 for £1.5 million plus player exchange;

I scored on my debut in a 4-1 win over Liverpool.

However, two broken legs (the second sustained in my first game back after the original injury) the following season restricted me to just one Premier League appearance and one goal in 1994–95 when Blackburn won the FA Premier League.

1n 1999 I moved on to Newcastle United to become Bobby Robson's first signing and team up again with former Blackburn rovers striker Alan Shearer.

Spells at Preston North End, Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town followed before hanging up my boots in 2002, ending a career which had seen me score 106 goals in 430 league games in English and Scottish leagues and earn 53 caps scoring 9 goals for Scotland.
